28 Weeks Later

Just when you thought it was safe to move back to London again there's another outbreak of the rage virus - turning people into zombie-like madmen. I wasn't impressed with the first movie "28 Days Later," but this sequel is much better. The only thing that annoys me is the VERY shaky camera. The movie is brutal and sometimes terrifying, and there's a great atmosphere in a desolate London. If you're a fan of zombie-action you don't want to miss this. Trust me. Grade: 4 out of 5

Death Tunnel

Five college girls are locked inside an old hospital where they have to spend the night with ghosts roaming the abandoned corridors. As this is a lowbudget feature I can live with the so-and-so acting, the almost non-existent story, and the confusing MTV-style editing. But I can't live with the fact that the movie is totally NON scary. On a positive note the movie looks visually great, and the girls are hot. But that's about it. Grade: 1 out of 5

The Mist

Want a talkie monster movie? You've got it. Frank Darabont directs another Stephen King story (He previously did "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile.") People trapped in a supermarket are attacked by strange creatures coming from the mist outside. This is a pretty small, intimate movie. I could compare it to Shyamalan's "Signs." The acting is good, but unfortunately the CGI-creatures pulled me out of the movie magic. I will remember the downbeat ending for a long time. Grade: 3 out of 5

See No Evil

Adult movie director Gregory Dark tries his hand on a real movie, and the result is this rather weak slasher. Teen criminals are sent to a hotel where a psychopath lurks - and soon he goes on a killing spree. Although the killings are brutal, there's too little suspense in this movie. One scene with a girl hanging out of a window stands out, and the last 15 minutes are pretty decent. Grade: 2 out of 5

Turistas

American backpackers in Brazil encounter bad guys who want their internal organs for the black market. Gritty and gory in the style of "Hostel." Although terrible things happen, there's no nerve, no real suspense. And the finale under water doesn't work for me. Grade: 2 out of 5

Captivity

An actress is abducted and held captured in a cellar by a crazy psychopath. How can she escape when he's watching her every move? There's a nice reveal in the middle of the movie that stirs things up a little, but it's not enough. "Captivity" has a few suspenseful scenes, but mostly it's quite boring. Grade: 2 out of 5

The Hills Have Eyes II

Wes Craven and his son wrote this 2007 version where some soldiers on a rescue mission in the New Mexico desert are attacked by mutant cannibals. I did like the remake of the original "The Hills Have Eyes" - but this sequel is just not very good. There's no real suspense, and we don't care about the characters. But expect some violent action and fights in dark tunnels. Grade: 2 out of 5

Friday The 13th 2009

It’s here, the new version of “Friday The 13th.” Jason, the boy who drowned in Crystal Lake, is in a bad mood and kills everyone in sight. It’s not really a remake of the original, because during the opening credits we get the backstory of Mrs Voorhees killing spree from the original movie. Expect some bad acting, sexy girls, and goofy dialogue, but the core of the movie, the killings, work well, and to be honest that’s why we went to see this movie in the first place. Grade: 3 out of 5

The Unborn

A young woman is being haunted by the spirit of her dead twin brother. The first half of the movie is quite good, slow, unsettling atmosphere. The style and music reminds me of the American version of “The Ring” The second half unfortunately turns into an over-the-top, not so scary, exorcism movie. Grade: 3 out of 5

Pulse 3

From the Dimension Extreme label comes this third installment of the Pulse franchise. Mankind have fled the cities where the ghost-plague spreading through the internet rules. A teen girl lives in a camp without technology, but decides to go back to the city and face the fears lurking there. The problem here is that the original movie didn’t impress me, and the sequels are even weaker.Pulse 3 showed some potential early on, but it turned out to be a disappointment. I’m actually quite nice when I grade this movie. Grade: 2 out of 5
